If you’ve ever crossed a bridge, opened a GPS map, or walked into a high-rise, you’ve stepped into a world designed by women.
But here’s the real talk: for a long time, their names weren’t on the blueprints. Today, on International Women in Engineering Day 2026, we’re changing that. The theme is #EngineeringIntelligence, and it’s about more than just smart machines: it’s about the technical skill, leadership, and vision women bring to every sector of the built world.
Here’s the blueprint. Let’s look at how we got here and where we’re going.
Industry Spotlight: Engineering
Today’s Industry: Civil, Mechanical, and Geospatial Engineering Engineering enables the structural integrity of our world: from the literal ground we walk on to the digital signals that guide our movement. Accuracy here isn’t optional: it’s critical.
Why It Matters
This industry runs on equations, models, and coordinates. Math is the engine behind every bridge, every satellite, and every sustainable city. When women are excluded from these rooms, we lose half of the world’s intelligence.
The Past: The Architects of the Impossible
Engineering has always required a specific kind of grit. Before it was a formal degree for women, it was a necessity.
Emily Warren Roebling: The Silent Chief
Think about the Brooklyn Bridge. It’s an icon of New York, but for over a decade, the person actually running the show was Emily Warren Roebling. When her husband, the chief engineer, fell ill, Emily didn’t just take notes. She studied higher mathematics and catenary curve calculations. She became the first woman field engineer, managing contractors and solving technical bottlenecks that would have stalled the project forever. She didn’t just help build a bridge; she built the standard for project management.
Kate Gleason: Breaking the ASME Ceiling
In 1914, Kate Gleason became the first woman full member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). She was a pioneer in gear manufacturing and machine tools. She proved that mechanical engineering wasn’t just "men’s work": it was a business of precision and industrial efficiency.
Dr. Gladys West: The Math Behind the Map

If you’ve ever used GPS to find a coffee shop or track a flight, you’ve used Dr. Gladys West’s math. As a mathematician and computer scientist at the U.S. Naval Weapons Laboratory, she developed the satellite geodesy models that accurately map the Earth’s shape. Her "Engineering Intelligence" transformed how we navigate the planet.
The takeaway? Girls don’t need permission to belong in math. They already do.
The Present: Leading the Built Environment
In 2026, women are no longer just "the first" in the room: they are leading the room. But the numbers tell a different story. Globally, only 16.5% of engineers are women. That’s a gap we can’t afford.
Dr. Deborah McCoy and Ann McNeill
We look to leaders like Dr. Deborah McCoy, a powerhouse in civil engineering and construction management. Her work isn’t just about pouring concrete; it’s about the strategy and STEM education needed to build resilient communities. Alongside her is Ann McNeill, a titan in the industry and a leader within the National Association of Black Women in Construction (NABWIC).
These women are the bridge between the technical side of engineering and the socio-economic impact of development. They are showing us that "Engineering Intelligence" is as much about people and policy as it is about physics.

At STEM Xposure, we partner with these industry giants to show our students that engineering is a viable, high-impact career. Whether it's through the Construction X program or navigating the complexities of urban development, representation rewrites what our girls believe is possible.

The Genius Lab at Enoch Davis Center
Located at the Enoch Davis Center, our Genius Lab is where the next Emily Roebling is currently coding her first AI model. We aren't just teaching girls how to use technology; we’re teaching them how to build it.
Through our partnership with Scoutlier, students are earning micro-credentials in cybersecurity and data science. This isn't "extra-curricular." This is workforce development.

Our Programs: The Blueprint for Success
She Draws: Where architecture meets AI. Girls learn the AEC (Architecture, Engineering, and Construction) pipeline, designing the buildings of tomorrow.
Construction X: This is where the boots meet the mud. Guided by licensed contractors like our own Robyn Donaldson, students get NCCER-aligned training.
Science of Beauty: Engineering isn't always hard hats. It's chemistry, product formulation, and the engineering of the perfect cosmetic bond.
The girl in the Genius Lab today will be the woman designing hurricane-resistant housing tomorrow. She will be the one leading construction teams and building the sustainable infrastructure that saves lives.
The Assignment: Let’s Scale Smarter
We have a 16.5% problem. The solution isn't just "encouragement": it's access.
STEM Xposure is on the ground in South St. Pete, providing transportation, nutrition, and mental health support alongside world-class STEM instruction. We are removing the barriers so that the only thing our girls have to focus on is their "Engineering Intelligence."
This is the move. We don't just want girls to enter the field; we want them to own the field.
